On Tuesday, December 2, the Indian stock market marked its second day of losses in a row as the investors kept taking profits in the face of a depreciating rupee and continued selling by foreign funds. The benchmark indices witnessed heavy selling pressure and closed lower, thus giving a cautious signal ahead of the monetary policy meeting of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The BSE Sensex lost 504 points (0.59%) to finish at 85,138 while the Nifty 50 fell by 144 points (0.55%) closing at 26,032. The total market cap of BSE-listed firms dropped by ₹1.82 lakh crore to ₹472.59 lakh crore.

The market mood is now totally focused on the RBI’s three-day policy meeting, which starts on Wednesday, with the interest rate decision expected on December 5.

According to Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, the downturn was influenced by weak IIP data, a depreciating rupee, and global market softness, along with caution ahead of major central bank announcements in India and the US.
